On January 20th, 2016, Donald J. Trump was sworn into office as the 45th President of the United States. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Donald Trump was the fourth of five children. At the age of 70, he is the oldest president to take office, and is also the richest. He is the only President to have “never served either in public office or as a general in the military” (Dogo News).
Inauguration day began with President Trump and his wife attending a church service at St. John’s Episcopal Church (as is tradition). Then, they headed to the White House for coffee with Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle. The two presidents then headed to the Capitol. At the Capitol, Mr. Trump gave a short, 16-minute speech, the shortest since President Carter’s inaugural address in 1977. His speech restated his campaign promise of “making America Great Again” (Trump). After his historically short speech, several blessings were given, and then Mr. Trump headed off to lunch. He at the traditional lunch of lobster, beef and chocolate with several lawmakers. After that, he traveled to Pennsylvania Avenue for the inaugural parade. Many seats were empty during the parade; lots of people boycotted the parade. After the parade, the new president and his wife, along with newly inaugurated Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, attended a three inaugural balls organized in honor of them.
