On Friday, January 27th, President Donald Trump signed an executive order temporarily banning 218 million people from entering the United States. The executive order blocked citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries for at least the next 90 days. Unfortunately for these people, the White House has stated that this is just their first step towards “establishing a broader ban” (CNN).
The Executive Order blocks citizens from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from entering the United States, nearly 218 million people. It’s unknown how many more countries will be added to this list, but the Executive Order states that the list will keep growing. President Trump stated that the Executive Order would be good for “protecting the nation from foreign terrorist entry into the United States” (Donald Trump). Not only does this Executive Order block people from 7 countries from entering the United States, it also states that the secretary of Homeland Security must conduct a 30-day review to determine which countries do and don’t provide “adequate information” for its citizens to acquire visas to enter the country. Lastly, President Trump has stopped the admission of all refugees to the United States for four months. Not only does the order ban refugees from the crisis in the Middle East, it also bans refugees from South/Central America, and anywhere else in the world for that matter. In my opinion, this executive order isn’t helping anybody. While it may stop “terrorists” from entering the country, it is harming thousands of people. We need to help these refugees, and this executive order will do nothing to help the refugees around the world for the next four months. Banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. isn’t going to help anyone either. In fact, all it has done is upset people. In response to this executive order, the president of Iran has banned all U.S. citizens from entering the country. On January 20th, 2016, Donald J. Trump was sworn into office as the 45th President of the United States. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Donald Trump was the fourth of five children. At the age of 70, he is the oldest president to take office, and is also the richest. He is the only President to have “never served either in public office or as a general in the military” (Dogo News).
Inauguration day began with President Trump and his wife attending a church service at St. John’s Episcopal Church (as is tradition). Then, they headed to the White House for coffee with Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle. The two presidents then headed to the Capitol. At the Capitol, Mr. Trump gave a short, 16-minute speech, the shortest since President Carter’s inaugural address in 1977. His speech restated his campaign promise of “making America Great Again” (Trump). After his historically short speech, several blessings were given, and then Mr. Trump headed off to lunch. He at the traditional lunch of lobster, beef and chocolate with several lawmakers. After that, he traveled to Pennsylvania Avenue for the inaugural parade. Many seats were empty during the parade; lots of people boycotted the parade. After the parade, the new president and his wife, along with newly inaugurated Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, attended a three inaugural balls organized in honor of them.
