Now that Donald Trump has been elected, it’s time for him to pick the people he wants to help him run the United States Government. Mr. Trump has started choosing the heads of the departments (they will make up the cabinet), and has also been choosing members for the national security team for his administration. Mr. Trump has recently announced three nominees for his National Security Team. He intends to nominate Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions as attorney general, Kansas Representative Mike Pompeo as CIA director, and retired Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn as national security advisor. Both Mr. Sessions and Pompeo would “be subject to Senate Confirmation” (cnn), but in the case of Mr. Flynn, “the position of national security advisor is not” (cnn). All three of these people are very different from the members of President Obama’s national security team. Mr. Sessions is most known for his views on immigration, which are similar to that of Mr. Trump. He will be a key factor in building a supposed wall between the United States and Mexico. Mr. Flynn is known for his temper, and his controversial ideas on the links between Islam and Terrorism. Not very much is known about Mr. Pompeo. I hope that these men will help make a good national security team, despite their controversial views. I also noticed that all three of these people are men, and none of them are women. I wonder if Mr. Trump will nominate any women to serve on this security team, and in his cabinet. Pictured Above: 45th President Elect Donald Trump
Donald J. Trump, multi-billionaire and radical thinker, was elected the 45th U.S. president on Tuesday. Contrary to the polls taken over the past couple of weeks, Donald Trump pulled off a win, shocking the entire country (and most experts). He won the election with a total of 279 electoral votes, while his opponent, Hillary Clinton, gained only 228 electoral votes. However, Ms. Clinton gained more votes from the popular vote than Mr. Trump did. This has only happened once before, during the Presidential Election in 2000, when Al Gore won the popular vote, but George W. Bush won the electoral college votes. Each state has a number of electoral votes based off of the number of representatives in congress. For example, California has 2 senators and 53 members in the house of representatives. Each member of the electoral college represents a certain part of each state. When people vote, they vote in their county, for their electoral representative. The representative in the electoral college votes for the person that gained the majority of the vote from the county. In this way, it’s possible for a candidate to win the popular vote but not the electoral college vote. When a candidate wins the presidency, they give an acceptance speech, and the losing candidate gives a concession speech. Mr. Trump’s acceptance speech wasn’t his usual rhetoric; he asked for “America to come together as one united people” (Donald J. Trump). I believe it’s very important for our country to come together as one after this election. But I think that’s going to be very difficult to do, considering that both Congress and the Executive Branch are run by Republicans. Now, people from the Muslim and LGBTQI+ communities are afraid. Not just them, but many of our people. I think that all we can do is hope for the best. This presidential election has been a memorable one (and not in a good way). Hillary Clinton still has a three-point lead over Donald Trump, despite the FBI deciding to reopen the case about her email scandal. 45% percent of likely voters say they support Ms. Clinton, while 42% would vote for Mr. Trump. This small lead shows that there is “little that could swing voters now in the final hours leading up to Election Day” (Kyle Drop, Morning Consult Co-Founder and Chief Research Officer). However, there is still a lot of uncertainty in the eventual outcome. Because of the unpopularity of the two main candidates, the polls show that about 12% of U.S. citizens will be voting for either Libertarian Gary Johnson (8%), or Green Party nominee Jill Stein (4%). Hillary Clinton is going into Election Day better-liked than Trump, despite the fact that they both have historically high unfavorable ratings for presidential nominees. 56% of likely voters have an unfavorable opinion of Clinton, and 61% of voters have an unfavorable opinion of Trump. However, while 42% of people have a favorable view of Ms. Clinton, only 37% have a favorable view of Trump, and while 5% may not seem like a lot, it actually is. However, if Ms. Clinton does win the White House, it’s been predicted that she’ll have a tough time dealing with Capitol Hill, which currently has a Republican Majority. More than half of the survey respondents support a continued GOP-led investigation into her use of a private email server, and surprisingly, over 25% of democrats surveyed agree. This survey/new article just go to show how difficult the next four years will be for the candidate that wins the white house. My opinion on this is that America could do a lot better. The unpopularity rates for both candidates are so low that 12% of Americans are voting for third-party candidates, knowing that they don’t have a chance at winning. I’m scared for the next four years, because while one of the main candidates is crazy, the other candidate would be facing a hostile congress and wouldn’t be able to get anything done. America is doomed. Source: http://www.politico.com/story/2016/11/politico-morning-consult-poll-hillary-clinton-donald-trump-230818 |
