Pictured Above: 45th President Elect Donald Trump
Donald J. Trump, multi-billionaire and radical thinker, was elected the 45th U.S. president on Tuesday. Contrary to the polls taken over the past couple of weeks, Donald Trump pulled off a win, shocking the entire country (and most experts). He won the election with a total of 279 electoral votes, while his opponent, Hillary Clinton, gained only 228 electoral votes. However, Ms. Clinton gained more votes from the popular vote than Mr. Trump did. This has only happened once before, during the Presidential Election in 2000, when Al Gore won the popular vote, but George W. Bush won the electoral college votes. Each state has a number of electoral votes based off of the number of representatives in congress. For example, California has 2 senators and 53 members in the house of representatives. Each member of the electoral college represents a certain part of each state. When people vote, they vote in their county, for their electoral representative. The representative in the electoral college votes for the person that gained the majority of the vote from the county. In this way, it’s possible for a candidate to win the popular vote but not the electoral college vote. When a candidate wins the presidency, they give an acceptance speech, and the losing candidate gives a concession speech. Mr. Trump’s acceptance speech wasn’t his usual rhetoric; he asked for “America to come together as one united people” (Donald J. Trump). I believe it’s very important for our country to come together as one after this election. But I think that’s going to be very difficult to do, considering that both Congress and the Executive Branch are run by Republicans. Now, people from the Muslim and LGBTQI+ communities are afraid. Not just them, but many of our people. I think that all we can do is hope for the best. Source: https://www.dogonews.com/2016/11/9/donald-trump-elected-45th-president-of-the-united-states-of-america
